Extreme Heat Warning for British Columbia
Know the Signs and Stay Cool
With extreme heat gripping British Columbia, residents are urged to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include nausea, dizziness, and muscle cramps, while heatstroke is characterized by confusion, seizures, and a high body temperature. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention by contacting a healthcare provider or calling HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1.
Take Steps to Stay Safe
In order to stay cool during the heatwave, the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth, advises British Columbians to take the following steps:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water.
- Seek shade and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours of the day.
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable materials.
- Cool down by taking cool showers or baths.
Emergency Alerts for Extreme Weather
In addition to heat warnings, the BC emergency alert system will also be used for extreme weather events such as floods and fires. This system allows authorities to broadcast critical information to the public through various channels, including text messages, email, and social media.
