Ismail Haniyeh, a top Hamas leader who led the Palestinian militant group's political office from Doha, Qatar, was killed while visiting Tehran on July 31, 2024.
Haniyeh, who was born in 1962 or 1963, was a prominent figure in Hamas, which has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007. He was widely considered to be the group's overall leader until his death was confirmed by Hamas on July 31, 2024.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has assessed that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, is coming under increasing pressure from his own military wing.
